I love free comic book day. It has my vote to become a national holiday. I could care less if the Post Office is closed if you’re going to give me free comics! Ever year the major comic companies along with the independents, put together free books, often to give you a taste of something you’re most likely not reading yet.
My idea was to go through all of the free comics I picked up, and let you know which was my pick as best in show. This turned out to be much easier than expected. Sure we had Iron Man, and The Simpsons, and an Aspen sampler (which if you haven’t gotten into any of the books by Aspen, you should give them a shot), but my pick, by a long shot, was the sampler by Radical Comics.
The Radical Comics sampler hit me with four titles, all of which show great promise in my eyes. The first story, Driver for the Dead, gives us a look into the life of Alabaster Graves. Silly name aside, he is a sort of supernatural grave digger, in this bit dealing with burying a vampire before sunset. In this sample alone we get voodoo, vampires, and dead cats. The art is gritty and has a nice edge that really feeds the content. This was by far my favorite showing of the day.
![]() We then get The Rising, where the government finds a hidden city that Hitler left under Berlin, that housed a weapon that threatens humanity. We now must time travel to stop the weapons detonation. Though this isn’t the first time we’ve had ties to Nazi Germany in Sci-Fi, the art is quality, and the writing is tight, so this title has promise as long as it’s executed properly.
The final two, After Dark and Time Bomb, are both pictures of our potential future. After Dark doesn’t have the page count to make the story entirely clear here, but they are bold in attempting to create their world in such a short space. I’m intrigued by the bit we get, but unsure of what exactly this is leading into. There is a talking jet bike though, so that’s pretty cool.
Time Bomb shows a world defeated by world war, then dominated by aliens, and follows a group of rebel humans trying to fight back against those aliens. The art here is crazy good, giving a nostalgic feeling that reminds me of old school Alien or Predator movies, mixed with a sort of Gears of War flair.
So that’s my pick from free comic book day, and in complete honesty I will be picking up at least the first few issues of these books by Radical Comics, to see where they’re headed. I guess if you aren’t into the whole, Sci-Fi, Horror, Fantasy thing, you can also feed your inner child with the free Sonic the Hedgehog comic they gave out. I used to love that blue guy. Check out Radical Comics, and keep reading the good stuff.
