Dear Thais: Renaissance Minority Writers PDF Print E-mail

This week Shawn Richards wrote me, lets read it together.

Dear Thais,

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last 13 years, you've heard of the BET awards program. In all their glory, you've witnessed as the talented, the beautiful, and the ratchet charismatic slink down the red carpet. Some pause to interact with fans. Pictures snap. Clothing is autographed. Cameras phones record. Shameless plugs, advise viewers of upcoming projects. Then there's always that one, reality star finicky, pseudo-celeb who arrives on the scene, with a head filled with allusions of grandeur. Trying way to hard to appear as if they belong, they'll start taking selfies to upload to various social media accounts. Then, just as they smile and snap the photo, Russell Simmons and Jay-Z walk by in the background. Oblivious each man is of the ensuing picture. They share a hearty laugh about one of Russell's most recent vegan mishaps. It's a once in a lifetime photo-bomb !

Less than five minutes later, the picture is uploaded to social media. The inevitable caption describing the scene reads. “Rolling with Rush and Hov, at the BET Awards! #NoHashtag”

Welcome to a typical evening at the BET Awards. Since it's inception in 2001, I, like many of you, have tuned in to witness many memorable, once in a lifetime moments. But my purpose for writing this article today is to discuss something I have never seen.  I have NEVER seen an award given out that highlights the literary achievements of any writer, or poet. With your support, we can change that.

My name is Shawn Richards, founder of the Renaissance Minority Writers Petition.   The purpose of this petition garner enough support from the African-American audience to challenge BET to highlight the achievements of thousands of deserving minority writers, across multiple genres of literature, and poets. It would also be an excellent opportunity for BET to promote literacy in the African-American communities that they cater to. For petition details, or to sign, please go to Or check out the like page on Facebook. Search; The Renaissance Minority Writers Petition.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
